New Adelphi Recording Studio Rules

You will find here a list of all the rules you are agreeing to by booking and using the New Adelphi Recording Studios.

Rules

1. No food or drink to be consumed in the recording studios with the exception of screw capped bottled water

The studios are full of expensive electrical equipment, which are in some cases also very rare and essentially irreplaceable. There's plenty of space outside the studios for consuming food or beverages and a kitchenette with a kettle for tea and coffee. There is an exception for bottled screw cap water for staying hydrated but please keep this a safe distance from the studio equipment.

2. Absolutely no alcohol or drugs in the studios*

Technically covered by the rule above but it is worth noting separately: if you are caught with alcohol in the studio you will face an immediate 2 week ban.

3. Show up to your studio sessions

The studios are a finite and essential resource in completing your technical assignments here on the music degrees at Salford and the amount of time available to you is very generous, we absolutely want all everyone to be able to have access to the studios to be able to learn and improve. However, a lot of studio time is lost to people not showing up or cancelling at the last minute every year, wasting time that could have been used by someone else. If you cannot make a session or need to cancel please do this as soon as possible by letting us know or manually changing your session on Connect2. Obviously, there may be exceptional circumstances where you cannot make a studio session and are unable to let us know, if this is the case just let us know as soon as you reasonably can.

4. Start and end your sessions on time

If you are running late for the start of a session please let us know by calling, if you fail to show up for a session it will be cancelled after 30 minutes and offered to someone else. Make sure to pack down your session on time and bring the key and equipment back to the office by quarter to the hour to allow time for the next session to begin.

5. Keep the studios tidy and reset them at the end of your session

The studios should be tidy when you arrive for you session:

- Microphone stands stacked neatly together

- Baffles and amps against the walls

- Drum kit reset on a matt in the centre of the room.

This is also how you should leave the studio when you finish, if you find the studio has been left in a mess at the beginning of your session inform the studios team immediately - if you do not do this it will be your responsibility. There are photos on the live room door of how each studio should be left for guidance.

6. Normalise the mixing desk at the end of your session

Reset the desk to make sure you do not cause issues in other peoples sessions.

- All faders down.

- All pots reset (to lowest or notched setting)

- All buttons de-pressed (busses, EQ enable etc.)

7. Do not tamper with studio wiring*

Under no circumstances should any wired behind the furniture be tampered with, if you are encountering a problem come and speak to a member of staff. Any one caught tampering with cables in the control room, with the exception of the laptop thunderbolt cable or your own USB cables for storage, will face an immediate 2 week ban.

8. If your name is on the booking you need to be in attendance

If you have made a booking in your name you must attend the session, everything that happens in that session is your responsibility and you need to be in attendance. Of course if you are working with a fellow student and stacking your time together this is fine, but you will both need to be in attendance.

9. Do not make bookings with gaps

We encourage students to make back to back bookings to make the most of the time available to you, for example booking two 3-hour sessions back to back to make a 6-hour session. However, these should always be booked concurrently. If we find any sessions with deliberate gaps in attempting to then extend into the space between your session will be cancelled without notice.

10. You are responsible for any studio guests, their behaviour, and their actions

We encourage students to find external artists and bands to work with or to bring in friends that are musicians, but it is your responsibility to make them aware of these studio rules and to make them aware of any health and safety points to ensure they can use the spaces safely. Ultimately it is up to your judgement as to whether you can trust someone to be your guest in the studios, but be aware that you are responsible for their actions and you may receive a ban if they break any studio rules.

11. Treat all staff, students, and peers with respect*

Hopefully an obvious one, treat other studio users and staff with courtesy and respect. This is a communal working space where everyone is trying to get the best out of there studio sessions. Staff are available to help with any issues you encounter or to offer advice on recording. Rudeness or abuse towards staff, students, or guests will not be tolerated in any circumstances. If someone is causing an issue for you speak to a member of staff immediately.

Bans & Consequences

These rules are about ensuring we keep this communal asset up and running for everyone, so that you can expect a certain standard starting point for your own sessions and your peers can expect the same. We want to ensure that the studios are a welcoming and creative space for all of you to work in. In an ideal world we hope none of the rules will be broken and we will not have to hand out any bans or otherwise.

Breaking the rules however can result in a 1 or 2 week ban, if you break a rule you will be given one warning or point, after receiving a warning breaking another rule will result in your Connect2 account being suspended for one or two weeks depending on the circumstances. In most cases this will not cancel any existing bookings but simply prevent your from making new ones, you should still attend any existing bookings unless you have been informed otherwise.

Certain rules above have been denoted with an asterisk (*). Breaking these rules can result in an immediate two week ban with the potential cancellation of any pre-booked sessions.

Hopefully a ban is something you will never have to worry about, and if you receive a ban for circumstances outside of your control, such as missing a session due to a medical emergency, then let us know as soon as you reasonably can so we can review your ban. However, upcoming deadlines or needing to complete work are not exceptional circumstances and will not result in a ban being overturned.
