There are fourteen display screens around New Adelphi used for showing student work and promotional material.

Seven of these displays are distributed around the building. They are single panels generally dedicated to still image content. To ensure equal exposure, each "poster" is displayed for twenty seconds from the carousel of images.

The largest Atrium display is generally dedicated to student work.

The large Theatre display shows promotional content for the theatres and performance spaces, and is accompanied by a smaller Studio display, facing out of the window next to the Studio Theatre entrance, towards the Newton building.

The Window displays facing out onto the Broadwalk are for special exhibition purposes.

Specification

Content for the majority of our displays should be provided at an aspect ratio of 16:9 and a minimum of 1920 x 1080 (FHD) resolution. This is our recommended format for the best balance of file size and image quality.

While "4K" content at 3840 x 2160 (UHD) is supported, not all displays are capable of this resolution. Content will be scaled down automatically on lower resolution panels.

Our Broadwalk window displays are portrait orientation and require content at an aspect ratio of 9:16 and a minimum of 1080 x 1920.

Content is not automatically rotated, therefore landscape content on a portrait display, or vice versa, will be letterboxed or pillarboxed and appear at a reduced size. This may be an artistic choice, so is left available as an option.

For similar artistic reasons it may be that lower resolution content is to be displayed. This content must first be scaled up to the minimum resolution, or provided at its original size on a canvas of the minimum resolution. This should be completed before submitting the content, as it gives the creator more control over the method of display.

All content will be re-encoded by the display screen system when uploaded.

Still images are accepted as JPEG or PNG files, while video can be H.264 or H.265 encoded in MOV or MP4 containers.

PowerPoint and animated GIF files are not supported.

Content from PowerPoint must be exported as individual image files. Please refer to Microsoft's documentation on how to achieve this. The resulting content will not be interactive and the display screens do not support this.

If you require interactive content then alternative equipment should be arranged.

Conversion

Images

Still images are generally converted automatically by the display system. So long as they are supplied in the correct aspect ratio there is nothing further to be done.

Video

Video content can be prepared for the screens using the free HandBrake software. This software is installed on all University suite computers.

From the Preset menu, please choose the Web > Creator 1080p60 option.

Creation of portrait content is more involved and we recommend contacting the technical team on am-screens@salford.ac.uk if you need support with this.

The "poster" displays can be found in the following locations:

Content

In exceptional circumstances, such as a special booking, event, or conference, it is possible to temporarily override other content. Please discuss this when submitting your media.

Should the display system run out of content a fallback playlist will be displayed.

Replay of content subject to external copyright will require an appropriate licence or written confirmation of permission from the copyright holder. Our displays are generally for original content generated in-house.

Quality

Content should be produced to a high standard. Material deemed to be poorly produced may be rejected.

Suitability

All content will be reviewed before display and must be suitable for viewing by members of the public. Where there is contentious material this may be restricted in its presentation time. Though there are potentially a number of stages of review, the final decision in all matters at the time of writing will be that of the Academic Director of Place Based Impact.
